BO DONN ~ THE BROWN COW ~ WANING CRESCENT MOON

Celebrating the Bo Donn is the third phase of the moon that we acknolwedge within our tradition because it atunes us with the Cow Goddess of Ireland.

During the season of Autumn, Bo Donn, the Brown Cow or old crescent moon is favored, although our lunar venerations will focus on Bo Orann or Bo Finn. However, to determine when Bo Donn occurs each month, look to the last quarter, for that is the herald of Bo Donn.

The autumn, Bo Donn will occur in September, October, and November. For the current Year's Dates, refer to the Lunar Calendar. These three dates are the best times of the year to perform the BOANN PATHWORKING provided.

What this should convey, is that the additional time to align with the moon in Autumn would naturally be Bo Donn, while using Bo Ruad or Bo Finn to celebrate the Sacred Tree month.

THE IRISH COW GODDESS

Boann, the White Cow

Boann was paramour of the Dagda, the All-Father, the Great God, and mother of Onegus (Aengus), the Mac Og.

Boann was the wife of Nechtain, but came from the south to the house of Elcmar, a Chieftain of the Tuatha De Danann and lord of horses, and Dagda desired carnal union with her.

Elcmar was dispatched on a long obscure errand by the Dagda and making nine months seem like one day, the Great God prolonged his absence while he seduced Boann. In the meantime, with Elcmar absent, Onegus was conceived and born. He was called the the Mac Og, the Young Son, for his mother said, "Young is the son who was begotten at break of day and born between it and evening.:

Boann, the Cow Goddess, became a cult figure of some importance among those late arrivals, the Celts, and was worshipped as a Cow-Goddess by them. Her cult-center was at Bru-na-Boann, the great neolithic cemetery of tombs and tumuli in the Boyne Valley.

BOANN PATHWORKING

Travel through the dolmen, into the land of Faery and there, in a deep and fertile valley of Westmeathe. Ireland snakes the Boyne river. Majestic, sapphire water, laden with trout, it flows through the green pathwork valley, moving before the mighty Bru na Boyne, Newgrange.

Torches flicker around the Bru na Boyne, beckoning, pulling, calling for entrance.

Down the long dromos (entrance passage) the light body moves. Damp earth, quiet solace, penetrating deepness of earth. Touching the triple spiral etched into the last orthostat before moving into the tholos (central chamber.

Above corbelled stones reach up. To the right, a decorated alcove with concave basin stone, smooth, worn, inviting. To the left, an alcove, containing very few decorations, quiet, peaceful, meditative. Directly infront, an alcove and directly to its left a perfect triple spiral carved into the sandstone.

From behind, the echo of chanting can be heard down the dronos. Turning to face it and the last of the fading sunlight as it melts from the sky, lingering twilight, casting shadows, glowing silver light muted, pulling, luring, seductively catching the light body and gently tugging it back down the passage and out into the night to see the horns of the Bo Donn rising in the east.

The voices of unseen beings, pay homage. The words lift you into the silver moon beam.

"Adorable Boann, Kindly Bo Find of all creatures, Goddess of love and laughter, we are orphaned of Thee! We have turned away from Thy joy which calls us through Nature to return again to Thy beautiful bounty. Bestow on us happiness and love; health and abundance."

Before you is Boann. She gives oracle:

"Because you ask Me for these gifts, you shall receive them! For long hard centuries you, my dear human children, have sought knowledge and authority, strength and sanctity, believing that these hardly won gains will make you as the Deities! But though it is well to be powerful, without love and happiness you are as nothing. And this love is not some strange and terrible passion that could tear you assunder, as it does when suppressed or misused: rather it is the kindly benevolence that not only seeks the gook for others - but also for oneself! For who would be the victim of another's immolation? True friendship and marriage are to share good things such as abundance, laughter and peace. For in the past you clever and hard-working ones have travelled the earth making converts to your puritanical civilization, but have made millons wretched and uprooted them from their own way of living.

"It is not for nothing that I am depicted with the solar disc between the horns of a cow! Do not despise me in this form, for as a cow I have four legs and can stand in my sleep, whereas the walking two-legged human suffers from unbalance! I give my milk generously and have the wisdom to stay where I am, either eating grass or meditating, which is what you call chewing the cud! You run around too much in your minds and with your bodies. Be peaceful. Be happy. And in this way you will, through gentleness, find power; through stillness, achieve progress, and by living fully each moment, gain abundance for all time. Know that I myself manifesting in this animal form derive My strength and health from killing and eating my fellows. You petition Me for health. Do likewise. Be Happy! For if you are happy now -- you are happy forever. To rejoice in the Eternal Now is my secret. My Love abideth, for it is the Love of the All-Mother."

Boann shines brilliantly, merging with the light body, together, one. Resting peacefully, chewing the cud, open, receive personal divine guidance.

Beloved One, when you have naturally returned from your audience with Boann, be sure to give thanks to Her for the personal divine guidance you were given.
