• As late as the 17th c, prior to the beginnings of modern medicine, people the world over could not explain in a rational way the causes of the ailments and dis-eases from which they occassionally suffered. This led them to look elsewhere for the sources, and it seemed obvious to them that the blame for bodily disabiities could be laid solely on either inimical beings (faery, spirits, the dead and such) from an invisible outside world, or else on enemies who, by means of the evil eye, tongue or heart, could cause physical harm to those whom they disliked. Ireland was no exception to this stance.

Irish Folk Healing is a course based on the old medical tracts and charms and remedies which are now in the Folklore Department at University College in Dublin. Many of these remedies come from Kerry.

To the Irish, the role of the healer was a very important one in olden times. Even though some of the herbal and other medications prescribed and used might be lacking in rational effect, nevertheless the manner in which they were applied and used were always of some benefit to the patient. The therapeutic effectivity of popular medicine cannot be judged solely from the view-point of modern practice. Those of us who study herbal and other remedies and are known to be "folk-healers" know that there is a truth to found in our ways of healing, which are intuitive and sympathetic.

Even today the best medicine is reassurance, and the abiity to reassure a patient does not always go with a medical degree.

While this course will not make anyone a "folk-healer," it will reveal the secrets used by those of us who do walk this pathway.

  • Welcome to the wonderful study of herbs. You are about to embark on a marvelous journey into a course designed to give you the most thorough, practical, hands-on learning experience possible with herbs. Though it does require a time commitment on your behalf, if used as intended, these lessons will provide a comprehensive understanding of herbalism and provide you with the skills necessary to be an herbalist.

There are 10 lessons, each provides an excellent solid foundation of herbal knowledge. The lessons combine earth awareness, scientific observation and research with practical folklore techniques and teachings to form a well rounded study of the science and art of herbalism.

Each lesson contains PROJECTS & ASSIGNMENTS and a Quiz. The lessons are designed to provide practical, hands-on experience. Each lesson gives directions and recipes on making herbal preparations, a list of herbs to research, and projects such as making an herbal first aide kit, designing an herb garden, or making your own herbarium and plant press. You are encouraged to complete as many of these projects as you can.

There is HOMEWORK. Once you have completed your homework and uploaded into the classroom, I am able to make comment on and work with you individually. One of the specialties of these lessons is the personal attention available for your questions and homework. I enjoy correcting your homework and responding to your questions. I also appreciate learning from you and invite your comments, favorite herbal recipes and suggestions.

The TIME COMPLETION of this course: you may complete these lessons on your own time schedule, but in order to utilize them to their fullest, I highly recommend you set up a scheduled time to do each lesson; one evening a week or an afternoon on the week-ends will keep your momentum going. The average time to complete this course is about one year. However, I've had students complete it as quickly as six months and as long as two years!

HERBAL SUPPLIES: when you sign up for this course, you'll be provided with a Table of Contents for the entire course and a list of supplies needed for each lesson. Except for the actual herbs, many of these items are readily available in a well supplied kitchen and/or local market or health food store. You will also receive recommended suppliers from whom to order your herbs and recommended books in this course.

Upon satisfactory completion of all lessons and all homework, you will receive a Herbal Certificate. This can either be downloaded or mailed (if you provide a SASE).

I hope to be able to share my love and knowledge of the plant world with you, and embark on this marvelous journey together.

    Blessings of the Green Ways,
    Kisma Stepanich-Reidling
